The Collegian AIG Board of Directors welcomes its newest member, Chris Krewson (Journalism, ’98). Krewson was appointed by President Robyn Radomski to fill the seat previously held by Sheila McCauley Young.
“I’m thankful for Chris’ commitment to supporting the Collegian and its students during these challenging times for local news,” Radomski said.
“I’m passionate about the future of local news,” Krewson said. “I work at the intersection of journalism and sustainable business operations, and student journalists are journalists, performing essential watchdog service even as they’re working toward degrees. The Collegian is still a vital part of the Penn State experience. I’m honored and hoping to help however I can.”
Krewson was an arts writer for the Collegian from 1996-98. Since 2019, he has served as executive director of the national nonprofit Local Independ
ent Online News (LION) Publishers, helping digital publishers work toward long-term sustainability.
Krewson pre
viously held leadership roles at Spirited Media and was the founding editor of Billy Penn in Philadelphia. He also helped launch Billy Penn’s Pittsburgh site, The Incline. Earlier in his career, he held senior digital editorial positions at Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and The Philadelphia Inquirer and worked at The Morning Call in Allentown. He began his professional journey at the Centre Daily Times following an internship on the features desk.
“It’s impossible to overstate how formative The Daily Collegian was to my life as a journalist,” Krewson said.
“Like most people who get swept into its operations, I would end up spending more time in that office on Burroughs Street than any classroom building on campus, and likely more conscious hours than in my off-campus apartments. Hanging around and grabbing assignments taught me how to touch-type because of the volume of copy I needed to move on deadline, a skill I’ve never lost.
“And as a result of hanging around, I went from someone with an academic interest in journalism to getting bitten by the news bug. I’m eternally grateful to Tom Berner, who saw something in one of my Centre Stage theater reviews and called it to the attention of EIC Julie Randall (Journalism, ’98). I’ve never looked back.”
